Air Travel and Entry Points

The Republic of Cyprus is primarily accessible by air through two international airports located in the government-controlled areas. These facilities serve as the main gateways for foreign nationals relocating to or visiting the island.

  • Larnaca International Airport (LCA): The largest airport, located on the southeast coast. It serves as the primary hub for long-haul flights and major international carriers.
  • Paphos International Airport (PFO): Located on the southwest coast, this airport is frequently used by low-cost carriers and charter flights, particularly from Europe and the United Kingdom.

For official entry into the Republic of Cyprus, travelers must use these recognized ports of entry. It is important to note that the Republic of Cyprus does not recognize Ercan Airport (ECN) in the northern part of the island as a legal port of entry. Entering through the north may result in administrative complications or the denial of future residency applications. Information regarding flight schedules and airport services can be found on the official Hermes Airports website.

Customs Allowances and Regulations

Customs regulations in Cyprus differ depending on whether a traveler is arriving from within the European Union (EU) or from a non-EU country (Third Country). These rules are strictly enforced by the Department of Customs and Excise.

Traveling from within the EU

There are no limits on what travelers can buy and take with them when traveling between EU countries, provided the goods are for personal use and not for resale. However, customs officials may use "guideline amounts" to determine if goods are for personal use:

  • Cigarettes: 800 items.
  • Spirits (over 22% alcohol): 10 liters.
  • Wine: 90 liters.
  • Beer: 110 liters.

Traveling from outside the EU

For individuals arriving from non-EU countries, duty-free allowances are more restrictive. As of Jan 2026, the following limits apply to travelers aged 17 and over:

  • Tobacco: 200 cigarettes OR 50 cigars OR 250g of tobacco.
  • Alcohol: 1 liter of spirits (over 22%) OR 2 liters of fortified wine/sparkling wine, AND 4 liters of still wine, AND 16 liters of beer.
  • Other Goods: Total value must not exceed 430 EUR ($447 USD, Jan 2026) for air travelers.

Detailed duty rates and updated exemptions are available on the Cyprus Customs and Excise Department portal.

Currency Declarations and Prohibitions

Cyprus complies with EU Regulation 2018/1672 regarding the movement of cash across borders. This is a mandatory requirement designed to prevent money laundering and illegal financial activities.

Cash Declarations

Any person entering or leaving Cyprus with 10,000 EUR ($10,400 USD, Jan 2026) or more in cash (or its equivalent in other currencies or negotiable instruments like checks) must declare it to the Customs authorities. Failure to declare can result in the seizure of the funds and administrative fines ranging from 500 EUR ($520 USD, Jan 2026) to significant percentages of the total amount.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

The following items are either strictly prohibited or require specific permits to enter the country:

  • Narcotics: All controlled substances are strictly prohibited.
  • Weapons and Ammunition: Requires a special permit from the Chief of Police.
  • Counterfeit Goods: Goods that infringe on intellectual property rights are subject to seizure.
  • Food Products: Bringing meat or dairy products from outside the EU is generally prohibited due to veterinary regulations.

Traveling with Pets

Moving to Cyprus with pets (cats, dogs, or ferrets) requires compliance with the EU Pet Travel Scheme. Requirements include:

  • An ISO-compliant microchip.
  • A valid rabies vaccination administered after microchipping.
  • A health certificate or an EU Pet Passport.
  • Entry must occur through a designated "Entry Point" for veterinary inspection.

For specific veterinary requirements based on the country of origin, travelers should consult the Veterinary Services of Cyprus.
