Overview of Visa and Entry Requirements for Cyprus

Cyprus, as a member of the European Union, maintains a regulated entry system that distinguishes between European Union (EU/EEA) nationals and third-country nationals. While Cyprus is not yet a full member of the Schengen Area border-free zone, it joined the Schengen Information System (SIS) in 2023 and follows a visa policy closely aligned with Schengen standards. Entry requirements are determined by the purpose of the visit, the duration of stay, and the traveler's nationality.

For official verification, travelers should consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus or the Civil Registry and Migration Department.

Short-Stay Visas (Category C)

Short-stay visas are intended for individuals planning to visit Cyprus for tourism, business, or family visits for a period not exceeding 90 days within any 180-day period. This category applies primarily to third-country nationals who do not belong to visa-exempt countries.

Visa-Exempt Nationalities

Citizens of the EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), and Switzerland may enter Cyprus with a valid identity card or passport. Additionally, citizens from countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia are granted visa-free entry for up to 90 days. A full list of exempt countries is maintained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Schengen Visa Holders

Holders of valid double or multiple-entry Schengen visas, or residence permits issued by Schengen Member States, are typically permitted to enter Cyprus without a separate national visa, provided their Schengen document remains valid for the duration of the stay.

Standard Application Fees

  • Short-stay Visa (Single Entry): 80 EUR ($88 USD, Jan 2026)
  • Short-stay Visa (Multiple Entry): 90 EUR ($99 USD, Jan 2026)

Long-Stay Visas and Residency Permits

For stays exceeding 90 days, third-country nationals must apply for a Long-stay Visa (Category D) or a Temporary Residence Permit (often referred to as the "Pink Slip"). The requirements vary significantly based on the applicant's activity in the country.

Employment Visas

To work in Cyprus, third-country nationals generally require a contract of employment validated by the Department of Labour. Companies of Foreign Interests (BCUs) benefit from streamlined procedures for hiring highly skilled non-EU staff. The minimum gross monthly salary for the highly skilled "key personnel" route is typically 2,500 EUR ($2,750 USD, Jan 2026).

Student Visas

Students must be enrolled in a recognized Cyprus educational institution. The visa is issued for the duration of the studies and must be renewed annually. Proof of financial means and health insurance is mandatory.

Digital Nomad Visa

The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa allows non-EU nationals who work remotely for employers or clients based outside of Cyprus to reside in the country.

  • Income Requirement: Minimum net monthly income of 3,500 EUR ($3,850 USD, Jan 2026).
  • Duration: Initially issued for 1 year, renewable for another 2 years.

Permanent Residency by Investment

Cyprus offers an expedited Permanent Residence permit (Regulation 6.2) for individuals who make a significant investment in the local economy. This permit does not expire and does not require the holder to reside in Cyprus permanently, provided they visit at least once every two years.

Investment Criteria

  • Real Estate: Purchase of new residential or commercial property with a minimum value of 300,000 EUR ($330,000 USD, Jan 2026) plus VAT.
  • Annual Income: The applicant must prove a secure annual income of at least 50,000 EUR ($55,000 USD, Jan 2026) from abroad.
  • Application Fee: 500 EUR ($550 USD, Jan 2026).

Application Procedures and Practical Steps

The application process for entry to Cyprus involves several administrative layers. Failure to provide correct documentation can lead to delays or rejections.

Submission Location

Visa applications (Category C) must be submitted at the Cyprus Consulate or Embassy in the applicant's country of residence. Long-term residence permits (Pink Slips) are processed through the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Cyprus.

General Documentation Requirements

  • Valid passport (valid for at least 3-6 months beyond the intended stay).
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host invitation).
  • Comprehensive medical insurance covering at least 30,000 EUR ($33,000 USD, Jan 2026).
  • Criminal record certificate (for long-stay visas).
  • Biometric data (fingerprints and photo) taken at the time of application or upon arrival for residency.

Exceptions and Special Cases

Different rules may apply to family members of EU citizens, who generally benefit from a simplified and free-of-charge visa process under Directive 2004/38/EC. Turkish nationals and citizens of certain other jurisdictions may face specific restrictions or additional vetting procedures depending on current bilateral relations and security protocols.
